There is a general perception among westerners that India is a poverty stricken country and all the defence equipments they have are junks discarded by soviet union and other countries. Nothing can be far from truth.
As and when the country became independent the assets of RAF(royal air force) got transfered to Indian armoury. For example, the aircraft 'gnat' developed by fortland company of British was used effectively used by Indian air force to neutralise Pakistani defence machinery during the wars of 1947-1948.
But there is altogether another matter that even the royal air force envisaged gnat to be a flanker rather than a offensive fighter. But Indian air force adopted the aircraft to the requirement of fighter jet and did a good job. But the negative side is less importance given to indigenous aircraft designs such as HF - 24 marut.
Recent developments in the Indian defence weaponry such as acquisition of dassault Rafael from France and T-50 joint development with Russia has made westerners to take notice about Indian air force, which is going far ahead of its economic scarcities and other constraints.
